More Natural Energy BoostersThe Body's Chemical EnergizersMost of the feelings people describe as 'energy' can be attributed to the results of two natural chemicals - adrenalin, the chemical of speed and heightened awareness, and serotonin, the chemical of happiness and enduring motivation. Serotonin keeps us energetic and optimistic, and controls our appetite.
Adrenalin
has an effect on the sympathetic nervous system,
heart, lungs, blood vessels, bladder, gut and genitalia. It is released
by nervous stimulation in response to physical or mental stress. Its
effects are: increase in the rate and strength of the heartbeat, dilation
of bronchia and pupils, constriction of the blood vessels, sweating
and reduced clotting time of the blood. From this you can see that frequent
or prolonged 'adrenaline highs' will not be good for the body. Why are people 'adrenalin junkies'? The terror of jumping out of a plane is rewarded with intense pleasure when the parachute opens. This could be compared with other extreme sports where danger produces the adrenalin, followed by the pleasurable sensation. One evening, at a group dinner party, I found myself sitting opposite a handsome young man. He confided to me that he was bored with life because he had ‘done everything’ and could no longer find activities that gave him an energy boost. I never found out what happened to this young man, but I hope he was able to turn to new and different interests to give him natural energy highs. Serotonin is called 'the Happy Chemical'. Unlike adrenalin, which gives an instant 'rush' and is a stress hormone, energy from serotonin is more sustained, and gives a longer-term feeling of well-being, enjoyment and pleasure. Serotonin is our most important neurotransmitter (transmits nerve impulses). It maintains our inner contentment, and is triggered by sunlight. Getting out into fresh air and sunlight for some time each day will help restore serotonin. In recent years there has been an alarming increase in the use of serotonin enhancing drugs, which produce the toxic condition of 'serotonin syndrome' with its horrific list of side effects. Serotonin is a natural chemical that regulates our moods, keeping them balanced. Too much serotonin affects appetite and sleep and too little affects our emotional state. The answer to keeping serotonin levels balanced is simple. Order'The Energy Book For Life' now. The subject of addictions appears to be a complex one, but it doesn't have to be. If we consider that we create our own reality and that we choose everything that happens to us, consciously or subconsciously, then any addiction is just another manifestation of a choice we have made, and it is usually the result of focusing on one source of energy above all others. What sometimes complicates the issue is the fact that the body may undergo physical or chemical changes because of the way it is treated in addictive circumstances such as eating disorders and drug abuse. But the most important thing to do is to change the focus of your attention, or the energy you are putting into holding the addiction in place. Instead of trying to force things into being you can change the way you are and what you do by changing your focus. Along with this is the necessity of finding different energizing things to create excitement and enjoyment in your life. 'Variety is the spice of life', after all. One form of addiction is towards or away from food or excessive exercise, leading to the de-energizing effects of being overweight or underweight. Have you experienced weight loss or weight gain without wanting to? At the age of 19, I was feeling lonely and depressed, despite having a good teaching job and a secure home with my parents. I put on ten kilograms (21 pounds) in weight in a few months. I was eating sweet foods, and not exercising. But the key factor was my depressed state of mind. Because I was missing emotional support I began to look forward to eating cake, and this became my addiction. Then I became involved in a lively theatrical production that took my focus away from myself. I met the man I later married, and 10 kg (22 pounds) of weight fell off effortlessly. I didn’t diet or increase my exercise. My state of mind and where I was directing my attention created a complete change in my energy and my actions that resulted in my body becoming more balanced. If you wish to let go of an addiction, the first thing to change is your mind; what you are thinking and what you are saying. Identify if there is an emotional reason for the addiction, and seek help from someone who is not going to give you drugs to ‘solve’ the problem. Letting go is key. In order to make a change, you must be willing to not only let go of the addiction, but to also let go of the mental image pictures that you have been conjuring up and the emotional states which are holding these images in place. The Energy Book For Life reveals more secrets to kicking unwanted habits and addictions. |
