More Energy TipsPosture as a Natural Energy BoosterHave you ever tried to say "I feel great" when you are slumped forward in your chair, or Have you tried to say, "I feel miserable", when you are standing tall with arms stretched high and eyes looking upwards. It just doesn't work, does it. I used to belong to a club called SWAP, which had a motto "I'm alive, I'm well, and I feel great". We would say this before and after each weekly meeting, and we had arm actions to go with it. It was amazing how energized this simple affirmation made us feel, and how charged up the meetings were because of it. Guest speakers would say they had never presented to a more enthusiastic and receptive audience.
Body language, which includes your posture is important, not only in energizing yourself, but also in making others feel energized, and attracting them to you. Changing your posture is a quick and easy way to change your energy. Stand and walk tall, and walk with a spring in your step. The other day I said to a friend, 'I bounced out of bed this morning.' When she asked why, Another friend soprano singer Deborah Leigh-Russell, and also teaches drama, showed me how to stand tall by imagining a string holding me up like a puppet from the back of my neck. By doing this, I keep my back and neck stretched, but my chin level. Holding your chin too high will cut off your airway making your voice sound strained and giving you a superior air. If you attend one of Deborah's shows you will see how warmly and clearly she communicates with her audience. Deborah gets her energy from people, and from music and singing.
In a customer service program I taught, one of the important telephone techniques was to check your posture before answering the phone. If you sit up straight, and hold your head up, your voice will sound energized to the person at the other end of the phone. If you slump, you may find the listener losing interest in your conversation, or asking you to speak up. So, if you are having a down day, sit, stand or walk tall, walk with a spring in your step, repeat, 'I'm alive, I'm well, and I feel great' three times while punching the air, and remember to bounce out of bed to enjoy your day. With these natural energy boosters you can't go wrong. |
